An Open Letter from a Father Who Just Lost His Son

On April 14th, my 18-year-old son Austin was taken to the hospital for what appeared to be dehydration possibly from the flu. Unfortunately, shortly after arrival he went into cardiac arrest. His lab work showed he had something horribly wrong. After getting a CT, a surgeon was called and he was immediately rushed into surgery. In surgery it was discovered that he had a small leak in his appendix which had been slowly poisoning his body. He was put into an induced coma however after great efforts and multiple heroic acts by this doctors in the ICU they ran out of options. Three days later he died.

As Austin's father; I felt like my entire life fell apart. Even now it has been 54 days since his death and each day continues to be an ongoing struggle. Losing Austin has given me a new perspective on life. It has reset my values and has showed me just how fragile life can be.

To me losing my son was never supposed to have happened as I always expected him to far out live me. This event has also made me realize just how much I took my time with him for granted. It has only been since losing him that I recognize just how important our relationships with friends and family are in our life.

Additionally, I now know just how important creating special memories and having new experiences are to living a fulfilling life. In the end, you can't take your money, cars, boats or homes with you. All that you will have is the memories you created along your personal journey as everything else will be gone.

Please go home this weekend and give your spouse and kids extra hugs and attention. Make sure to tell them that you love them because you never know when something unexpected could happen to any one of them.

Sending love and care to everyone,
    Ray

I can only imagine the hurt and deep sorrow, yet it really made me think. What about ‘Our Father’? How many times has He gone through this…the loss of a son or daughter…to the dark side?

The difference is that He can do what those surgeons could not…He can save.

So if you are lost or you know someone who is, bring them home to their Father. Let’s make this the greatest ‘Father’s’ Day ever!

    He can save.

Yet, why doesn't he? Why does he let us go through stuff, if he can save us in the first place?

Much like it is said that Santa will leave coal in the stocking of children who have been bad...God needs His children to be deserving...to be saved.

And for all those times when we lose someone...especially a loved one...yes, they are no longer with us...but if they believed...they are saved.

As for going through stuff...do you actually believe that an Olympic gymnast performs a perfect routine in the competition without having gone through thousands of failures and even some injuries?

Life is simply us attempting to live the perfect life that Jesus did...surely an impossible task that will be strewn with struggles to overcome...but there is no greater reward.

I am not sure you got my question.

Why do people have to suffer? Why does God allow children to starve? Why does He allow child abuse?

Wen we pray for healing, why does it feel like he's not there?

Too far gone, damaged goods...that's all I feel.
